TASK
In cooperation with Tranzept Veranstaltungstechnik, who had chosen MXWendler in 2018, we installed our FXServer in the Great Mint Hall of the "Alte Münze" in Berlin. The goal was permanent fixed video projection on a 270° panoramic screen.
In the large minting hall of the industrial location "Alte Münze" in Berlin, there is a circular 270° screen in a 469 square meter room with a ceiling height of 7.10 meters. The task of MXWendler was to install a permanent fixed video projection. For the future events of various occasions, it was necessary to provide a projection surface of 286 sqm and 8,400 x 1,000 pixels, including the recess of a door. In addition, a dominant column close to the screen shortened the distance between projectors and screen, requiring wide-angle lenses.
6 ceiling-mounted projectors were available. This resulted in many fades on a curved surface, requiring complex mapping of the projection. In addition, the surfaces of the curved portion of the circular horizon were curved, creating a belly in the direction of the projectors.
Due to the complex projection surface, the constantly changing content, the number of outputs and the long cable runs, it was necessary to install a particularly stable permanent media server system.
SOLUTION
With a single 8 Head FXServer and the StageDesigner, the videos of the Neo.Fashion. Show 2021 were played out via the 6 projectors onto the 270° panorama screen of the Alte Münze. Numerous audio cues were added.
The long SDI cables in the 469 sqm hall were connected to the FXServer's high-quality converters to HDMI, ensuring stable playout of the projectors via the media server. Its physical EDID management also ensured that pulling out output cables could not change the layout of the displays and thus the mapping settings.
The StageDesigner mapping tool allowed the mapping and crossfade adjustments to be put into effect by softedges on the undulating round arch. The shortened distance between column and screen due to the column in the center of the hall posed no problem for mapping with MXWendler, as well as the widely angled projectors. Automatic tools and corrections would have failed given the screen characteristics and the dominant column. There would have been no way to create a panoramic image via automatic calibration at any point in the hall.
The door within the screen could be left out by using the precise StageDesigner masking tool. The StageDesigner grid ensured the height-to-width ratio of the six projection surfaces so that the image flow was not disrupted when video content spanned projectors across the panorama.
Since the arch projection and hall are suitable for staging a wide variety of events, there is a frequent change of video and audio content. By setting up a permanently installed FXServer, it was possible to automate the mapping for future events and establish a simple feed concept. Constantly changing production teams can now use the panorama projection quickly and easily for their various applications. With the Neo.Fashion. show, which took place in September 2021 as part of the Berlin Fashion Week, the installation was able to prove itself particularly well.
The special feature of the Neo.Fashion. show was the extensively designed video content, which was delivered by the 32 graduates* of the 4 universities and imported into StageDesigner in a single huge file by the MXW operators within two days. With StageDesigner "Playlist" and "Preload" GB-wise amounts of data and about 200 cues could be brought into regulated processes. A big advantage of the playlist and preload tool was the separation of playlist cues and media in the preload. The graduates were able to deliver their revised content at short notice without having to adjust the playlist scheme that had already been created.
In addition, two live cameras were connected to the FXServer and their recordings were integrated into the playlist as separate mapping elements in order to be able to play them back permanently in the panorama projection.
The MXW operators and 24/7 support were on hand to help set up the mapping and show.
