TASK
During the 2019 Genius Loci Festival, a video mapping performance on the newly inaugurated Bauhaus Museum in Weimar was meant to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the art school.
As in every year, the 2019 Genius Loci combined the historical spirit of Weimar and the contemporary technique of video mapping. But the occasion was a very special one.
The festival marked 100 years of the Bauhaus and 100 years of the founding of the Weimar Republic. These two great chapters of world history were to be reflected in the video mapping installations. Therefore, it was a logical consequence to stage the Bauhaus Museum, which had only opened in the same year, with a video installation.
As a contemporary, clearly structured building, the new museum offered the perfect façade for an installation in the sense of new media architecture. The task of media art and MXWendler was to express the recognition value of the Bauhaus audiovisually.
SOLUTION
Media architecture with a difference: hands explore the facade, begin to create sounds and rhythms and transform the building into a body of light and sound. The audience picks up the rhythm and becomes part of the performance.
Colors and shapes typical of the art school were used by the winner of the competition, film and media artist Jonas Denzel, to stage the Bauhaus Museum in terms of media architecture.
Since the video mapping show was played many times a day, it is enormously important, in terms of resources alone, to control the playouts in an automated way. With the StageDesigner playlist principle, the various functions could be controlled in the form of cues, so that, among other things, the projectors could be activated day after day without human intervention.
It was a special pleasure for MXWendler to use the FXServer and StageDesigner at the new Bauhaus Museum. In this way, the art school is closely interwoven with our company history and the demands we place on the medium of video: Technology meets art, meets architecture, meets media and meets shapes and light.
