TASK

40 beamers transformed a hall on the RAW site into an immersive experience. The goal was to offer visitors the opportunity to switch off in an "immersive room" in the heart of Berlin.

In an old 100 sqm industrial hall on the RAW site, 40 beamers were mounted on the ceiling in a sophisticated arrangement. Video projections in all directions were to illuminate the space in such a way that visitors would get the feeling that reality and virtuality were blurring together.

In order to be able to operate the power of the numerous, high-resolution laser projectors, several high-end computers had to be installed. Countless kilometers of cable had to be laid and a separate media server room created so that the technology would not interfere with the spatial experience.

The 40 video projections on the floor and walls now had to be transformed into a coherent image so that the immersive experience could be created in the first place.

SOLUTION

The content created by video artists was assembled, edited and mapped onto the walls and floor of the room with the help of StageDesigner - true to the idea of "art meets technology".

The challenge of the exhibition was the coordination and performance of the 40 beamers as well as the mapping on the created 360° surface including the floor of the room.

The "Keystone" of the StageDesigner MappingTool made it possible to precisely adjust and merge the multitude of projection surfaces and overlaps using edgeblending.

With StageDesigner "Playlist", the sequence of the mass of video and audio cues could be created and, thanks to the tabular display, transferred into a clear system. The automation functions ensured the operation of the exhibition show without the need for operators. Due to the independence of the "playlist" cues from the content in StageDesigner "Preload", the show can be exchanged without much effort, should the "Lighthouse of Digital Art" pursue a new exhibition theme.

The multi-monitor handling and EDID management of StageDesigner-FX allowed MXWendler's video engine to safely handle the power required for the 40 outputs and data-intensive content. In particular, the daily runtime of five to ten hours and the live performance nature of the show made reliable performance essential.

The result was a projection surface 15 times larger than the area of a conventional cinema screen, which could now display coherent scenes. The immense impact of the video projections and the sound create an immersive experience that transports more and more visitors into parallel worlds.
