TASK
Nothing more than the future of mankind was to be staged and reflected to the audience in the stage design of (R)Evolution at the Thalia Theater Hamburg.
The Israeli director and author Yael Ronen staged (R)Evolution at the Thalia Theater Hamburg. She dealt with the topic of the digital revolution, which basically should only promise good things. She contrasted this ostensibly positive narrative with the mechanization and exploitation of the earth. Together with the acting ensemble, she developed a world in which Homo Digitalis ruled, who had to deal with challenges not entirely unknown to us today.
A controversy arose between tech euphoria on the one hand and relationships to artificial intelligence and virtual realities on the other, which as a side effect displaced billions of people from the labor market. The piece was inspired by Yuval Noah Harari's "21 Lessons for the 21st Century."
Technization and virtuality, the realities of life for homo digitalis, were to be staged with the help of a futuristic stage set.
SOLUTION
Projections and live videos in a dynamic and futuristic stage design reflected the complex world of Homo Digitalis on the stage of the Thalia Theater.
An FXServer system with 3 full HD outputs played out video content and live camera signals via 4 projectors. There was a front projection for the iron curtain and the floating platform.
The focus of the audience was the massive floating platform with a circular recess in the center, through which the performers stepped in several scenes. It not only floated, but also varied in position. With the help of StageDesigner-FX, it was possible to precisely map onto the flexible projection surface. To ensure that the different projection surfaces and content played automatically, several mapping settings were generated as files and organized as cues in the playlist according to the show sequence.
In addition, another front projection was added for the rear display on stage.
The third output of the FXServer media server was split between two projectors for the side displays. Both received the same signal, with each projector outputting only half of the image. In height, all 1080 pixels of the HD signal were used. In width, the 960 pixels of a horizontally halved HD signal were stretched to 1260 pixels to fill the displays.
For the front projection onto the platform, different keystones for different platform stands were also loaded to hide parts of the projection onto the platform.
