TASK

On Franz Liszt's "Altenburg", the spirit of his villa and his musical works should be reflected in an architectural mapping during the Genius Loci Festival 2021.

This year, the Genius Loci was finally able to combine the historical spirit of Weimar and the contemporary technique of video mapping again. Since the festival in 2020 unfortunately had to be cancelled due to Corona, the performances of last year's winners were also to be presented.

The focus of Genius Loci was to be the video mapping on the former residence of the composer Franz Liszt - the "Altenburg" - in addition to some other important buildings. The villa was given to Franz Liszt and his partner Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein in 1885 in order to deliberately settle the cultural avant-garde here and make Weimar an intellectual crystallization point.

Great names of past times - from Goethe to Hoffmann von Fallersleben and Bettina von Arnim, from Johannes Brahms to Robert Schumann - have stayed at the Altenburg over the years. Even a revolutionary and terrorist - the politically persecuted composer Richard Wagner, who was wanted by the Saxon government at the time - found shelter in the villa for some time.

The task for the video and media artists and the MXWendler team was to breathe new life into this place of the former cultural avant-garde and intellectuality with façade projections.

SOLUTION

The video mapping installation "Rhythm and Line" by the audiovisual artist duo Flightgraf during the Genius Loci Festival 2021 showed the art form of architectural mapping in its purest form - in rhythm and in lines. With this performance they won the Video Mapping Award 2022!

The audiovisual artist duo "Flightgraf" won the projection screen "Altenburg" along with another artist. Precise shapes and lines as well as electronic sounds combined with the facade and spirit of the building - the former residence of composer Franz Liszt. Liszt's improvisational skills were expressed in the changing, unexpected shapes and sounds.

The video performance impressively demonstrated how precise mapping and composition of audio and video can be played out with StageDesigner. The projections could be precisely adapted to the many lines, curves and rectangles of the otherwise puristic facade and synchronized with the rhythms of the electronic music.
